As the year draws to a close, it becomes a very special time for two reasons: 1. To enjoy my family and 2. To evaluate the past year and formulate our plans and goals (personal and professional) for the coming year so that next December we can look back and see just how far we’ve come.

And to get my mind in a creative mood, I always watch three movies…Field of Dreams (my all-time favorite), The Walt Disney story, and The Greatest Showman.

Now the last two are biographies of two people who literally changed the world and how we view it. The first movie while not true I believe has touched everyone who has ever viewed it in some way.

Now quickly…what do all these movies’ main characters have in common? They had a dream. They saw something that no one else could see. They saw a better world, a happier world, a way of transforming people by giving them something they never had before.

What else did they have in common? All three were met with fierce resistance! Resistance from friends, family, outside interferences, etc. They were laughed at, ridiculed, made fun of and often led tortured lives because of it. They went bankrupt over and over, were mocked in the newspaper, ridiculed, and even asked to leave their town. But even through all that, they never lost sight of their dream.

And the third thing they had in common? Simply a word called perseverance! They simply persevered! They didn’t quit when things went against them. In fact, the more they were attacked, they stronger they fought back.

And guess what? They persevered! They won! They saw their dreams come true! And because of them, the world became a better place for all.

We’ve all enjoyed the circus, Disney World and maybe even taking time to “have a catch” with our dad because someone believed in the impossible.

On the chiropractic side of this, I had a unique and very fortunate opportunity to spend a lot of time with a man who had a dream. He dreamt of a school that taught chiropractic and only chiropractic. And because of this dream, he was scorned by almost every association in his own field. He was hated by many and was ultimately brought down by his own “colleagues”. But not before his dream had become a reality…the world’s largest principled chiropractic school! It was the greatest lesson he ever taught me.

Call me crazy but I’m going to guess that many of you also had a dream at one time. That dream was to help people through chiropractic. Hopefully, that’s why you got into this profession. And somewhere along the way, you also ran into resistance. How you’ve handled that resistance has led you to where you are today.

So as you go into this next year, take it from someone who has been in the trenches for a long time. Follow these steps and I guarantee that next year at this time you’ll be closer to seeing your dreams come true.

Write out your vision for you, your family and your practice (Take your time and do it right)
Write out your mission statement for the coming year
Write out each and every goal you have for the coming year
Write out the steps for reaching each goal and begin doing 3 things every day until you accomplish each goal.
You can make a difference in this world! You just have to have a strong enough dream and the perseverance to make it come true! Merry Christmas!
